Evelyn Matthei Fornet nació en Santiago de Chile en 1953, es casada con el economista Jorge Desormeaux Jiménez y tiene tres hijos.
Estudió en el Colegio Alemán de Santiago. Es Licenciada en Economía de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, donde obtuvo el premio Raúl Yver a la Mejor Egresada de la Promoción.
Trabajó en el Departamento de Estudios de Forestal SA, como Analista Financiero y luego como Jefa del Departamento de Estudios de la Superintendencia de AFP y fue Subgerente de Establecimientos Comerciales, Turismo y Seguros en Bancard SA.
Luego ingresó a la política, resultando electa en 1989 como Diputada por el Distrito de Las Condes, en 1993 como Diputada por el Distrito de San Antonio y en 1997 como Senadora por la Región de Coquimbo, donde fue reelecta el año 2005.
En el Congreso ha integrado las comisiones de Hacienda, Presupuesto, Salud, Trabajo y Previsión Social, Economía y Comisión Revisora de Cuentas. En 2009 presidió la Comisión de Hacienda y la Comisión de Presupuesto del Senado, siendo la primera mujer en presidir esas comisiones.
Es militante del partido Unión Demócrata Independiente, y habla fluidamente alemán e inglés.

Born in Santiago de Chile in 1953, she is married to the economist Jorge Desormeaux Jiménez and has three children.
She studied at the German School of Santiago, and then Economics at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. In 1979 she obtained the degree of Licenciada en Economía, and was awarded the Raúl Yver distinction to the best student of that generation.
She worked as a Research Analyst at Forestal SA, as a Financial Analyst and as Head of the Research Department at the Superintendence of Pension Management Companies, and was appointed as Deputy Manager of commercial stores, insurance and tourism at Bancard SA, a credit card managing company.
She was elected as a Member of Congress in 1989, representing the district of Las Condes, and in 1993 for the district of San Antonio. In 1997 she was elected to the Senate representing the Region of Coquimbo, being reelected in 2005.
She has been a permanent member of the Finance and the Budget Committees in both Chambers, and has also been a member of the Committees of Health, Labor and Social Security, Economics and of the Senate Audit Committee. In 2009 she became the first woman to chair the Senate Finance and Budget Committees.
